Hiking the Appalachian Trail: New Hampshire Adventure | Part 1 (2026)

The hiker's journey through the Appalachian Trail continues, with a focus on the New Hampshire section. On June 23rd, the trail offered a diverse and beautiful experience, with a mix of open fields and the White River bridge marking the entry into New Hampshire. The author, accompanied by their brother Mike, enjoyed a pleasant chat and a steady pace as they made their way to Dartmouth.

The following day, June 24th, began with a hearty breakfast burrito and a drop-off at Hanover Center. The author met fellow hikers Buttercup and Take5, and embarked on a climb out of Hanover, enjoying the pleasant weather and a mix of ups and downs. The South and North peaks of Moose Mountain provided some nice views, and a steep climb later in the day was a welcome challenge.

On June 25th, the author tackled Smarts Mountain, a strenuous hike with a fire tower at the top. The Eastman Ledges and Mount Cube followed, with the latter proving to be a mud pit, a reminder of the trail's unpredictable nature. The author struggled to reach the Ore Hill tenting sites, but the mosquitoes provided a welcome distraction.

The next day, June 26th, brought rain as forecasted, but the author managed to avoid the worst of it. They found a cozy Hiker's Welcome Hostel, where they met fellow trail friends and strategized for the upcoming Whites section. The author plans to slack-pack north to south, taking an extra night at the hostel before moving further north.

This journey through the Appalachian Trail is a testament to the author's resilience and the trail's ever-changing nature. With each day bringing new challenges and experiences, the hiker's determination to reach Katahdin remains unwavering. The trail's beauty, both natural and man-made, is a constant source of inspiration, and the author's camaraderie with fellow hikers adds a layer of warmth to the adventure.
